Artists interpret Yeat's poem "The Song of the Wandering Aengus"...
THE SONG OF WANDERING AENGUS
by: W.B. Yeats
WENT out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And some one called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun. |

Barber Gallery is pleased to host “Up North” – the Bruce and Beyond, an exhibition of recent work by artists Scott Abbott, Laura Coutts, Barry Hodgson, Joel Masewich, Leslie Miles, and Janet Ollers.
“While exploring this classic Ontario scenery, much can seem reassuringly familiar at first. Then one begins to appreciate how much is hidden from the road, how many more scenes there are to paint, and the challenge of doing justice to these natural wonders sinks in. But with observation, time and exploration both geographic and creative, we feel we came to know something of their beauty.
This show is about our time on the Bruce and around Georgian Bay. It is about what we have found beyond geography, in the realm of the imagination. We hope you enjoy it.”

Cross-Section
Central Ontario Art Association
Barber Gallery is pleased to host “Cross-Section,” an annual juried exhibition by members of the Central Ontario Art Association.
Central Ontario Art Association is one of the oldest and largest Canadian organizations devoted to the visual arts and artists’ interests.
Tracing its origins from 1954, educators, teachers, and artists combined local art organizations in Wellington, Waterloo, Halton, Dufferin and Peel thereby creating the Five Counties Art Association. Further counties joined, and in 1966 the name was changed to the Central Ontario Art Association.
Its mission is to bring together people with a common interest in art, to provide artistic opportunities, encourage art appreciation and education, pool area efforts and resources, develop leadership in the arts and foster in-group cooperation and participation.
This year hundreds of entries were juried by Guelph Artist Nan Hogg to comprise a 40-piece exhibition on display at the Barber Gallery from May 23rd to June 22nd.
Long time Guelph resident and artist Nan Hogg holds an Ontario Teachers Certificate, a BA in History from McMaster University and an Honours Equivalent in Fine Art from the University of Guelph. An occasional teacher with the Upper Grand District School Board, she’s also taught painting and drawing in her private professional studio in Guelph, the Southampton School of Art, and was a teacher/co-ordinator of “Art Workshops” in Elora, presented by the Wellington County Museums and Archives. Her extensive and diverse career as a juror has included work with the Guelph Studio Tour, Hillside Festival and Fair November.
We welcome you to join us for “Cross-Section” running from May 23 to June 22 with an opening party and awards presentation, Saturday May 23rd from 2-4 P.M.

Pictures Talk....November 10th to November 20 with an opening reception Tuesday November 10th starting at 11:00 A.M. ...
Barber Gallery is pleased to host “Pictures Talk” a Canadian Red Cross touring exhibit.
The exhibition is a collection of 26 photographs, selected from over one thousand taken by 41 Indonesian children touring galleries across Canada.
The exhibit runs from November 10th to November 20th with a free opening reception Tuesday November 10, at 11:00 A.M.
The 2004 tsunami affected hundreds of thousands of children across Indonesia who lost their homes, schools and in many cases, loved ones. By providing a glimpse into the lives of these children today, the exhibit offers a unique perspective on how life returns for young survivors in disaster-affected communities. More importantly, the exhibit celebrates the resilience of children whose lives have been altered by disastrous circumstances.
When the tsunami struck in 2004 the response by Canadians was overwhelming. Moved by the powerful images and stories on the news of tsunami survivors their own age, thousands of Canadian school children from coast to coast generously contributed to support relief efforts.
This exhibit touring with the Red Cross, is an opportunity for children to see how their donations have helped children in Indonesia rebuild their lives.
As well, part of a three artist, three continent touring exhibition, “Kedamaian,” works of peace and compassion by Australian artist Anna Niblic Heggie, will be on view. Beginning at the Barber Gallery in Guelph, then touring Indonesia and Australia, Kedamaian, through visual art, told the ancient story of Indonesia.
We welcome you to join us for “Pictures Talk,” a thank you Canada, from Indonesian children.

Royal City Calligraphy Guild
The Royal City Calligraphy Guild celebrates 25 years with the “ Paper Magic Show” at the Barber Gallery, from October 31, 2009 to November 24, 2009 with an opening reception Saturday October 31st from 2-4 P.M.
The membership, neophyte to expert, using letter forms that incorporate a wide range of magical expression; whether it is family trees, Japanese calligraphy or etched glass, stone carving, journaling or book-binding, continues to flourish.
Ruth Hamer and Susan Nelson began informal meetings in 1984 to explore letter shapes, inks, papers, stone, glass … anything the imagination could dream up to scribe on and with. Workshops and lectures commenced in 1985 and evolved into ‘InkLinks’, a biennial symposium in 1995. In 1987, the name Royal City Calligraphy Guild was adopted. RCCG became a member of the Guelph Arts Council in 1988.
Members have access to an extensive library in the lettering and related arts; e.g. origami, bookbinding, card and envelope design and tri-monthly newsletters. RCCG, 25 years later, continues to inspire members in their exploration of the magic of letter shapes, techniques and tools.
Please join us as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the guild with script, a remarkable art form at the Barber Gallery, 167 Suffolk Street West in Guelph. (519) 824-0821. Free Admission. Free parking.

Come as you are Convivencia!
We welcome everyone to join us for our annual Christmas “come as you are convivencia.” Forty- five visual artists, Ishra from Invoke-Tress Dance Theatre, Nico and Goldie from Flying Dance Company, and drummer Peter Howlett, celebrate shared life with visual art, dance performances, food, drink, festive spirit, and an opening party Saturday November 28th from 2-4 P.M. Welcome everyone. Seasons Greetings!
Here's what it's all about.
Convivencia
Sharing the Flame
"We are all, with our feet rooted firmly upon earth,
Whilst many look up … to the stars"
Olde Irish proverb
Convivencia simply translated, as “sharing life” is historically a term applied to periods in medieval Spain, where diverse cultures living together in respect and peace embraced ideological interchange and cultural influence. Powerfully influencing the creation of poetry, art, and architecture, this beacon of light encouraged the transmission of scientific ideas, medicine, astronomy and technology throughout the medieval world.
Symbolising excellence in human spirit, the Olympic flame inspires us to follow our dreams and reach for the stars. While Canadians prepare to welcome the world for the 2010 Olympics, we’re coming together to share and celebrate cultural diversity, our shared Canadian winter, sport, art, and ideas. Convivencia!
Embracing convivencia, forty plus visual artists participate with representational and abstract works including, icons of medieval convivencia, shared ancestry through DNA, shared solitude of our vast Canadian geography, and the magic of shared winter experience. Works are as individual as the artists themselves and are interpreted through a variety of disciplines.
The show runs from November 28th to Feb. 8, 2010 with an opening party Saturday November 28th from 2-4 P.M. Drummer Peter Howlett, Ishra from Invoke-Tress Dance Theatre, Nico and Goldie from Flying Dance Company will interpret convivencia through performance art. Special thanks to everyone at F&M Brewery and Yellow Tail Wines for sharing their convivial spirit.
We invite everyone to join in the fun and help share the flame! Convivencia! Welcome!
As winter approaches, we’re hoping to collect good used (or new) winter sporting equipment, figure skates, hockey skates, sticks, sleighs and toboggans to help families enjoy outdoor rinks and toboggan hills for free winter fun. If you know anyone discarding good used equipment… please… pass this message along and we’ll pass their donation along. Drop off is at the Barber Gallery, 167 Suffolk Street West in Guelph, or phone the gallery at (519) 824-0821, or Leslie Hayes (519) 824-8037…. Thank you! Old Irish, Scots, Welsh, Germanic, Russian, Norse, Norman, and Slavic definitions with roots in the middle and far east, site abundant text, mythologies and stories concerning the nature of, and what it means to be… women.
Mother, daughter, sister, lover. Friend, warrior, worker, teacher… Cwen combines qualities, some sacred, some not so much, in an attempt to interpret the feminine mystique.
