Concert! Emm Gryner and Royal Wood posted: 2008-09-04 18:31:39
Emm Gryner and Royal Wood... Concert at the Barber! Emm Gryner and Royal Wood Date: Sunday Sept 7, 2008 Location: Barber Gallery, 167 Suffolk Street West in Guelph, (519) 824-0821 Doors: open 7:30 P.M, 8:00 P.M. show start Tickets: $15 advance, $20 door Tickets sold at Ground Floor Music & Barber Gallery –Barber Gallery tickets cash only. An intimate evening with Emm Gryner and Royal Wood: One of Canada's most acclaimed indie artists, Emm Gryner crafts highly polished, yet emotionally raw pop songs. Her talents caught the attention of international stars such as David Bowie and The Cardigans, both inviting her to perform in their touring bands. U2's Bono declared "Almighty Love" to be one of the six songs he wished he had written. After a year and a half with David Bowie, Emm left to return to her career. In 2006 she released the critically acclaimed The Summer of High Hopes, "a winning mix of indie-rock, orchestral pop and ballads ... stunning." Brian Campbell of the Irish News Emm is also the co host of CBC's "Under The Covers" with musician Danny Michel. She runs her own record label, m Dead Daisy Records. Label mate Royal Wood is a multi- instrumentalist who started with the piano at the age of four. His self-written, performed and produced releases The Milkweed (2003) and Tall Tales (2004) have garnered critical praise. "The album (Tall Tales) drifts from sad pastoral laments to capering piano pop jubilance with an effortlessness that is truly staggering." Now Magazine For his third album A Good Enough Day, Royal enlisted a few of his Toronto friends including Hawksley Workman, Kevin Fox and Harmony Trowbridge. His music has been featured on several TV and movie soundtracks including the HBO series Regenisis and the CBC series This is Wonderland. The Barber Gallery is pleased to host “Unhung” an exhibition of current work by teachers of the Upper Grand District School Board. The show runs from October 4 to October 29 with a free opening reception Saturday October 4 from 2-4 P.M. The show provides a rare opportunity to showcase work created by local secondary school art teachers. Often with limited time to pursue their own creative passion and endeavour, secondary school teachers ardently promote art for both their students and the community. Beyond the class room doors, teachers mount exhibits for their students, facilitate mural creations, and are found behind the scenes creating prop sets and advertising materials for visual arts courses and theatre studies in addition to attending to art services required by their schools. Please join us as we celebrate the teachers among us. “Unhung” will feature a variety of themes and applications in their diverse show. Free admission. Free parking. Rob O’Flanagan “New Paintings” The Barber Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition of new paintings by Guelph artist Rob O’Flanagan. The show runs from November 1st to November 26th. Please join us as we welcome Rob with an opening reception and party Saturday November 1st from 2-4 P.M. Admission is free with lots of free parking. Rob O'Flanagan has spent the past 20 years exploring a number of visual art directions, concentrating most of his efforts in recent years on painting. A native of Saskatchewan, he is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, where he studied history, English literature and art. His exhibition history includes a number of solo and group shows, and two public gallery exhibitions with his brothers Tom and Terry – "Field Notes" at the Edmonton Art Gallery in 2004, and "Three Ply" at the Art Gallery of Sudbury in 2006. Rob has a studio in downtown Guelph. He is a staff reporter for the Guelph Mercury and has worked as a journalist for 15 years, twice being nominated for Ontario Newspaper Awards. Rob is also a poet, writer of fiction and spoken-word artist. He is the author of the "Blown Kiss Collection", a volume of short stories. He wrote and broadcast a weekly story-telling series on CBC Radio in northern Ontario in the 1990s, and has written extensively on art. “I appreciate the relative simplicity and directness of abstraction. Painting is an intuitive and reflective process – a constructive, many-layered and meditative act, full of surprises. My new work is somewhat of a throwback to the idealism and hopefulness of early 20th Century abstract painting, particularly to the Russian Suprematist and Bauhaus styles.”

John F. Ross's DaVinci Arts & Science Environmental Leadership Program enables grade 11 students to obtain their credits in the natural setting of the University of Guelph's J. C. Taylor Nature Centre at the Arboretum. This art show encompasses works inspired by various aspects of the course including a five day wilderness canoe trip to Killarney. The students were also leaders for an elementary EcoArtist program in which grade four students came and learned about the interconnection of art and science in various habitats. With concern for the environment, the elementary and the secondary school students also created sustainable art inspired by Andy Goldsworthy. These artworks were photographed in Killarney and at the Arboretum.

Free admission. Free parking. St. Patrick's day Feist! Artists interpret Yeat's poem "The Song of the Wandering Aengus"... THE SONG OF WANDERING AENGUS by: W.B. Yeats WENT out to the hazel wood, Because a fire was in my head, And cut and peeled a hazel wand, And hooked a berry to a thread; And when white moths were on the wing, And moth-like stars were flickering out, I dropped the berry in a stream And caught a little silver trout. When I had laid it on the floor I went to blow the fire a-flame, But something rustled on the floor, And some one called me by my name: It had become a glimmering girl With apple blossom in her hair Who called me by my name and ran And faded through the brightening air. Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun.

Scott Abbott, Laura Coutts, Barry Hodgson, Joel Masewich, Leslie Miles, Janet Ollers. Runs April 18 to May 19. Barber Gallery is pleased to host “Up North” – the Bruce and Beyond, an exhibition of recent work by artists Scott Abbott, Laura Coutts, Barry Hodgson, Joel Masewich, Leslie Miles, and Janet Ollers. “While exploring this classic Ontario scenery, much can seem reassuringly familiar at first. Then one begins to appreciate how much is hidden from the road, how many more scenes there are to paint, and the challenge of doing justice to these natural wonders sinks in. But with observation, time and exploration both geographic and creative, we feel we came to know something of their beauty. This show is about our time on the Bruce and around Georgian Bay. It is about what we have found beyond geography, in the realm of the imagination. We hope you enjoy it.” The show runs from April 18 to May 19, 2009 with an opening reception Saturday April 18 from 2-4 P.M. Free admission. Free parking. Cross-Section Central Ontario Art Association Barber Gallery is pleased to host “Cross-Section,” an annual juried exhibition by members of the Central Ontario Art Association. Central Ontario Art Association is one of the oldest and largest Canadian organizations devoted to the visual arts and artists’ interests. Tracing its origins from 1954, educators, teachers, and artists combined local art organizations in Wellington, Waterloo, Halton, Dufferin and Peel thereby creating the Five Counties Art Association. Further counties joined, and in 1966 the name was changed to the Central Ontario Art Association. Its mission is to bring together people with a common interest in art, to provide artistic opportunities, encourage art appreciation and education, pool area efforts and resources, develop leadership in the arts and foster in-group cooperation and participation. This year hundreds of entries were juried by Guelph Artist Nan Hogg to comprise a 40-piece exhibition on display at the Barber Gallery from May 23rd to June 22nd. Long time Guelph resident and artist Nan Hogg holds an Ontario Teachers Certificate, a BA in History from McMaster University and an Honours Equivalent in Fine Art from the University of Guelph. An occasional teacher with the Upper Grand District School Board, she’s also taught painting and drawing in her private professional studio in Guelph, the Southampton School of Art, and was a teacher/co-ordinator of “Art Workshops” in Elora, presented by the Wellington County Museums and Archives. Her extensive and diverse career as a juror has included work with the Guelph Studio Tour, Hillside Festival and Fair November.
